Preparation begins for MoMa PS1's new air-scrubbing nylon star
        by Francesca Giuliani

The nylon air-cleansing concept that won MoMa PS1's 2012 Young Architects Program, Wendy is now set to grace the Long Island City museum's courtyard during the forthcoming summer months. Designed by New York-based architecture firm HWKN, the project aims to test the potential of architecture for ecological and social impact. Treated with a innovative titania nanoparticle spray to neutralize airborne pollutants, during its time at MoMA PS1 Wendy is projected to eat a quantity of smog equivalent to removing 260 cars from the road.

The website features a video preview of the final installation, demonstrating Wendy's ability to interact with its surroundings through blasts of cool air, mist, water cannons and music.

HWKN is seeking a host of volunteers to help bring the sustainable structure to life. For those wishing to contribute to Wendy's assembly between 15 May an

Foster + Partners Unveils New Steel Pyramid Passive Art Museum in Datong, China

Construction has begun on the Foster + Partners-designed Art Museum in Datong’s New City, in China. The distinctive 32,000 sq m museum will be largely submerged into the ground, with the four large interconnected steel pyramids which form its roof appearing to erupt through the surface of the surrounding plaza. The dramatic, unusual structure also assists with the museum’s passive energy savings, as skylights placed within the north and north-west facing pyramids allow for maximum natural light while minimizing the impact of solar heat.

BUNK: Celebrating 60 Years of the Independent Group

BUNK: Celebrating 60 Years of the Independent Group
“The Independent Group looked at, discussed, analysed, wrote about, designed, built and assembled a galaxy of highly significant work exploring contemporary culture “as found”. Using a range of sources including the pages of science-fiction magazines, Jackson Pollock’s paintings, Hollywood film, helicopter design, the streets of London’s East End and modernist architecture the Independent Group created a radical approach to looking at and working with visual culture.”
It’s 60 years since the Independent Group first met, and the work is attracting increased attention on an international scale. This two day event celebrates the Independent Group’s legacy at the very institution which first fostered and encouraged it. Contributors explore the history and legacy of the Independent Group in relation to art, architecture, design, material culture, photography and critical theory.

Bauhaus: Art as Life

Bauhaus: Art as Life
The biggest Bauhaus exhibition in the UK in over 40 years presents the modern world’s most famous art school. From expressionist beginnings to a pioneering model uniting art and technology, this London exhibition presents the Bauhaus’ utopian vision to change society in the aftermath of the First World War. Bauhaus: Art as Life explores the diverse artistic production that made up its turbulent fourteen-year history and delves into the subjects at the heart of the school: art, culture, life, politics and society, and the changing technology of the age.
Bauhaus: Art as Life will feature a rich array of painting, sculpture, design, architecture, film, photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre and installation. Exemplar works from such Bauhaus Masters as Josef and Anni Albers, Marianne Brandt, Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Hannes Meyer, László Moholy-Nagy, Oskar Schlemmer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Gunta Stölzl, wi

Walk this way?

The Crisis in American Walking. Tom Vanderbilt on the reasons why ‘the United States walks the least of any industrialized nation’ (the title of one article Vanderbilt cites encapsulates the problem, ‘Columbus residents see potential benefits of sidewalks‘). The US certainly isn’t alone in having declining walking rates, but like many other countries, walking has a strange status as a universal pastime that becomes more eccentric and esoteric the closer one studies it: ‘the pedestrian life is one so removed from daily consciousness that to participate in it implies some higher purpose’. Related, the forthcoming Smart guide to Utopia, where the ‘smart’ in question is a purveyor of four-wheeled mobility. In Europe at least, any debate about ‘urban futures’ is almost wholly coloured (and controlled) by the auto industry, who realise their way of doing business has to be spun into the new narratives about our place in the city.
